Nature Recovery Through Sourcing Construction Materials

Quarries may seem unlikely homes for wildlife, but Heidelberg Materials, in partnership with BirdLife International, is turning these sites into essential habitats for biodiversity. By creating safe spaces for species, like migratory birds and native pollinators, this partnership showcases how quarries can support nature even while producing 800 tonnes of limestone aggregates annually.

Through carefully managed biodiversity plans, they build habitats for lizards, amphibians, and insects, and control invasive species to preserve natural grasslands. When extraction ends, the site is returned to nature, offering long-term refuge for wildlife. This model shows how conservation and industry can align, starting sustainability at the very roots of the supply chain.
